Guys I love this week:
Xander Schauffele to win/top 10/ top 20
Xander is the best player in the world to have not won a major championship. The X-man is playing great, consistently great in majors, and has shown he is able to handle links style golf. X has finally switched away from his lock-armed putting style and is starting to heat up on the greens. Top 25 on tour off the tee, around the greens, and putting. Don’t be surprised when X-man finally gets it done this week.
Marc Leishman to win/top 10/ top 20
I rode Marc Leishman at the Travelers like Luis Saez rode Essential Quality at the Belmont Stakes and it paid off very well. The Aussie has top-6 finishes three out of the past six years and is currently in decent form. He is a bit of a high-risk, high-reward option, but he enjoys links style golf and let’s hope he can make a run on the weekend.
Matchups:
Brooks Koepka over Dusitn Johnson
The average golf fan may say that Brooks Koepka isn’t currently playing great golf, and they would be dead wrong. Brooks has finished top 5 in three of his last four starts, including two majors. He played a lot of golf in Europe early in his career and should be able to play well again in a major against DJ. DJ not in great form, 56th around the greens and 71st in putting. I’ll ride with Brooks.
Viktor Hovland over Bryson Dechambeau/ Tyrell Hatton
Vik Hovland won his last time out and appears to be in decent form after WD from the US Open with an eye injury. Basically, a fade of Bryson, who is a complete train wreck right now, and the mad Hatter who is hard to trust. The rising star Vik Hovland just plays solidly and should be able to handle Bryson and Hatton this week.
Harris English over Will Zalatoris
Everyone and their dog were on the Zally train after his impressive showing in the PGA Championship. Since then, he has gone t-59, CUT, 77, and t-26. He is new to links golf and should continue to struggle this week. Harris English is a dog, more specifically a bulldog. Guy just goes out and competes every week is in great form, winning his last time out. Solid around the green and playing the best golf of his career, easy play this week.
Longshots:
Lee Westwood to win
Phil won the PGA at 50, why can’t Westwood win at 48? He played really well earlier in the year and obviously loves to play in Europe. Maybe there is a little magic left in the tank for him.
Branden Grace to win
Why not? He is at too high of a number for the amount of good golf he has played recently. Don’t be surprised to see the South African lurking around the top of the leaderboard Sunday.
